Diamond City

Before Diamond City ever existed many native Americans lived in here. When the area was explored by the Spanish in the 16th century there were as many as 16 indian tribes living there. But it is also here the trail of tears passes by in the late 1830's. In the beginning of the 19th century settlers came to the Ozarks from eastern and southern United States. They were mostly of Scots-Irish or german descent and were searching a better life. Some stayed, others moved on westwards after only a generation or two. They founded the town Dubuque. Dubuque was the last stop for all the steamboats heading north on the White River. but the town was ruined in the Civil War. A new town grew up by the river and was called Lead Hill but when the river was dammed up most of the town was moved to the intersection of highway 7 and 14. But in the 1960's the area where Dubuque once had been was developed and 1966 the little village Sugar Loaf, was renamed Diamond City and is today a town of about 600.
