According to the legend, the romantic name of Evening Shade was made up by the Postmaster of the town. He owned a mill and filed for a post office but needed a name. When he saw the tall pines cast shadows on his mill, he knew what the perfect name would be. This was in 1847 and Evening Shade was, together with Hardy, county seat for Sharp county.
Thanks to the Evening Shade TV-sitcom in the 1990's the town became famous. With help from the stars from the TV-series Evening Shade marketed a cookbook and could raise the money to build a gymnasium and auditorium for the school. The buildings were named after the actors from the Sitcom, Burt Reynolds and Linda & Harry Thomasson.
Evening shade has a population of almost 500.
